Metabase

Simple open-source BI: ask questions of your data and build dashboards without SQL.

What is it

Metabase is an open-source BI platform that makes analytics accessible to the whole team. Users ask «questions» of the data through a visual builder without knowing SQL, while analysts can write SQL directly. Results are assembled into dashboards with filters, and there are subscriptions and alerts. It is easy to deploy self-hosted or in the cloud.

Where and why it is used

I use Metabase when the business needs self-service access to data without a complex rollout: dashboards, scheduled email reports, ad-hoc questions to data marts. It works well as a lightweight self-hosted BI and as a replacement when auditing overloaded or expensive systems.

  • A good balance of simplicity and capability

Cons

  • Complex custom visualization is limited
  • On large datasets, queries need optimization
  • Advanced features are in the paid version
